Seed Bombs

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m building a modest balcony-based container vegetable and herb garden right now that’s making me interested in urban plants, but regardless, I found this idea fascinating. MontrĂ©al-based artist and gardener Gina Badger has been creating and deploying “Seed Bombs”. Those in the photograph are in an art gallery, but they’re intended for the street, where so-called “guerilla gardeners” can lob the dried balls of seeds and fertilizers into spaces they couldn’t otherwise access, like off overpasses or into abandoned lots. The goal being to get flowers or pleasant-smelling herbs into more spaces around the city.

Though sometimes illegal, I find this sort of self-motivated civic engagement inspiring.
