Toaster Art
On my recent trip to Lithuania, I dropped by the Vilnius Contemporary Art Centre. If what we saw was any indication, the art scene in the Baltic countries is extremely creative, accessible, and downright fun. Eastern Europe probably isn’t known in the west for its humour, but its art was generally quite funny and playful. It was the sort of gallery anyone could walk into and “get it” without having a prior knowledge of art.
They were also mercifully generous in letting me take photos of whatever I wanted, which was appreciated, and quite rare for an art gallery in my experience.

There were a few pieces which struck my eye, but this one was quite fun. There was a toaster and a loaf of bread on a table. The visitor was urged to take bread and toast it.
When it popped up, the bread would be imprinted with an image of Jesus, Charles Manson, Osama Bin Laden, or some other icon of good or evil. A really simple idea, but fun and interactive.
